GAF Ridge Vent Installation: The Ventura Owner’s Guide
GAF ridge vent installation in Ventura typically runs $650 to $1,400 for a standard single-family home, including the vent material, fasteners, removal of the old ridge vent or cap shingles, and all labor. We stock GAF Cobra ridge vent rolls and Snow Country ridge vent on our trucks, so most Ventura installs are done in a single visit, usually four to six hours. Most homeowners find out their ridge vent has failed the same way: they climb into the attic on a hot afternoon and it feels like a sauna, or they spot shingles lifting near the roof peak after a Santa Ana wind event.
Here’s the thing about ridge vents in Ventura’s climate: they work harder here than almost anywhere else in California. We don’t get the snow that Snow Country vents are built for, but the marine layer off the Pacific pushes moisture into attics from April through July, and the Santa Anas bake the plastic components every October. A ridge vent that was installed a decade ago is usually brittle, cracked, or clogged with dust and salt air by the time we get called in. And once the vent fails, your attic becomes a kiln. You’re paying for it in air conditioning costs and, eventually, warped decking and shortened shingle life.
Which GAF Models This Applies To
GAF makes two main ridge vent systems, and knowing which one you have matters for pricing and installation. The GAF Cobra Ridge Vent is the workhorse: a rolled, shingle-over ridge vent made from a stiff polymer mesh with an internal weather filter. It comes in 20-foot rolls and works with nearly every GAF shingle line, including Timberline HDZ, Timberline UHDZ, and Royal Sovereign. The GAF Snow Country Ridge Vent is the higher-profile version, built for snow-heavy regions, with a baffled external design before shingles are placed over it. Ventura homes occasionally have Snow Country installed, usually when the original builder ordered the same roof system used in a mountain project.
Here’s a compatibility gotcha most people don’t know: GAF’s warranty on a full roof system only covers the ridge vent if the vent matches the shingle line’s installation specifications. Mix a Cobra vent with the wrong shingle series, or worse, install an aftermarket vent on a GAF roof, and you’ve quietly voided the parts of the warranty you could actually collect on. We’re an independent roofing company in Ventura, not a GAF dealer, but we keep OEM GAF parts on hand because they’re what the warranty language expects. An aftermarket ridge vent costs less, sometimes $30 – $50 less per 20-foot roll, but the savings vanish if a warranty claim ever gets denied. When you call us, we’ll ask you to check the underside of the vent from inside your attic or pull a shingle near the ridge to look for the GAF stamp. That’s how we match the right part on the first trip.

Signs Your GAF Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Attic heat in the late afternoon. If your attic hits 130°F on a 75°F Ventura day, the ridge vent isn’t moving air. The underlying cause is almost always crushed or flattened vent material, which happens when the original installer nailed it too tight or walked on it during shingle work.
- Shingle edges lifting near the peak. When a ridge vent’s plastic base warps from years of sun and salt air, it pushes up against the cap shingles. You’ll see a wavy line along the ridge. The fix is removal and replacement, not re-nailing.
- Condensation or rust on the attic side of the roof decking. That means moisture is trapped. The vent’s internal filter, which is supposed to keep wind-driven rain out while letting hot air escape, is clogged with dust, pollen, or salt film from offshore breezes.
- A persistent drip near the ridge after winter rains. GAF vents have a filter membrane that sheds water. Once that membrane dry-rots or tears, water walks straight in. This is more common on Ventura homes within a mile of the coast, where salt accelerates the breakdown.
- Roof rats or birds in the attic during the summer. Failed ridge vents with cracked plastic bases leave a clean entry point at the roof peak. We’ve pulled nests out of more Cobra vents than we can count. The cure is a fresh vent with intact end caps and a proper overlap.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a single-story ranch in East Ventura or College Area, expect to pay $650 to $900 for a complete GAF Cobra ridge vent replacement with standard cap shingles. A larger two-story home near Ondulando or Hidden Valley runs $900 to $1,400, depending on ridge footage and whether we’re replacing Snow Country venting or repairing damaged decking at the peak.
That number is installed and complete. It includes removing the old vent and cap shingles, inspecting the ridge opening, installing the new GAF-compatible vent with the correct nailing pattern and overlap, sealing end caps, and re-covering with cap shingles that match or coordinate with your existing roof. Every estimate is a written, line-item price. The number you see before we start is the number you pay when we’re done. We don’t add change orders once work begins unless you ask for additional scope, and if we find decking damage at the ridge, we’ll send you a photo and a revised number before we touch it. And because every repair we do in Ventura is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise, if the new ridge vent fails within a year, we’re back to fix it at no charge. As Dylan Pace says: “If it’s not in writing, it’s not a promise.”
DIY or Call Us?
You can check a few things from the ground or with a ladder: look for cracked plastic visible at the ridge ends, run your hand along the attic ceiling on a hot day to feel for heat buildup, and inspect the attic side for daylight coming through the vent. Those checks are free and worth doing before you call.
What we don’t recommend is replacing a ridge vent yourself. You’re working at the highest point of the roof, removing cap shingles where the roof pitch falls away on both sides, and trying to keep a consistent gap on the ridge opening. Nail the vent too tight and you crush it. Nail it too loose and the first Santa Ana picks it up like ribbon. Plus, if your roof is under a GAF warranty, a DIY ridge vent replacement is a fast way to void it. We’re happy to do an inspection and give you a written number before any work starts. Call (559) 249-4917 and we’ll schedule a time, send you a live arrival link, and put everything in writing.
FAQs
Most GAF ridge vents in Ventura last 10 to 15 years with proper installation, though homes within a mile of the coast often see closer to 8 to 12 years because salt air accelerates the breakdown of the plastic base and filter membrane. The shingle cap may still look fine years after the vent itself has failed, so attic temperature checks are the more reliable indicator. Call (559) 249-4917 and we’ll inspect yours.
A small crack at one end cap can sometimes be sealed and capped, but sections of crushed vent material, a torn internal filter, or warped plastic along the ridge cannot be repaired in a way that holds. Once the base has lost its shape, the vent won’t move air correctly, so we replace the damaged length. For severe deterioration, we replace the entire run. We’ll show you photos of exactly what we found before you decide.
Most GAF ridge vent replacements in Ventura take four to six hours from setup to cleanup, and we can usually complete a standard single-story home in one visit. If we’re replacing venting on a steep two-story roof or repairing decking at the peak, expect a full day. You’ll know the timeline before the crew arrives.
Yes, we keep GAF Cobra Ridge Vent and Snow Country Ridge Vent in stock at our Ventura shop, along with matching cap shingles and end caps. We also carry compatible ridge vent options for Owens Corning and CertainTeed roofs. If you know your shingle line, tell us on the phone and we’ll bring the right vents. If you’re not sure, we’ll pull a cap shingle on arrival and match it then.
